Near-field localization using extremely large antenna arrays (ELAAs) will play an important role in sixth-generation wireless communications. Although there are techniques for near-field localization in the literature, in data modeling and problem solving, most of them use simplified assumptions such as near-field propagation approximation (instead of an exact model), the presence of uncorrelated signals (the absence of coherent signals), and the neglect of mutual coupling (MC). The conventional maximum likelihood (ML) method can be used to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) and range of coherent signals and the MC of the receiver array. However, the computational load of the ML method can be extremely high due to three-dimensional searches over DOA, range, and MC. In this paper, considering a more practical scenario without relying on the above simplification, a near-field localization algorithm in the presence of coherent signals due to a multipath environment, and by considering MC in ELAA, is proposed. To overcome the challenge of the high computational complexity of the conventional ML method, we decouple the DOA and range information. This is achieved by partitioning the ELAA, enabling a selective access to the near-field and far-field regions of the aperture. Then, the DOA is estimated using ML in the far-field, which relies on a one-dimensional (1D) search. Finally, the ranges are estimated using another 1D ML technique in the near-field. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method while offering a significantly lower computational load than the ML method.
